PS Plus Essential Games for July 2024 Announced

Not to my personal taste but 3 fairly well known decent games none the less

Nothing to complain about as far as I'm concerned, especially when you think of the absolute trash Xbox used to give away with games with Gold

I see it reviewed poorly here but I'll give NHL a go, I loved ice hockey games growing up.

Been a few years since i checked out NhL that works for me. Otherwise i have too much between new releases and extra/premium past essentials to care

Borderlands 3 is great

Already played Borderlands 3 some years back... It was pretty Borderlandsy. As for Among Us, well that's saved a whole £3 for anyone who was planning to buy it.

Thankfully nothing to add to the backlog this month, which seems rather silly saying but it's getting too big. Already have BL3 in backlog, personally no interest in among us, as don't like graphic style or multilayer games, and although NHL is probably good, I didn't really play the previous ones on plus despite loving it back in the megadrive days. I like the occasional match in fifa as I love footy and used to love the footy games but just don't have spare time to commit to those one offs and single games nowadays.

Next month looking VERY SUSSY AMOGUS

Huge hockey fan but IMO NHL 24 is fantastic. Could be a little cumbersome for newcomers but if you like the sport at all this is great value.

I played Borderlands 3 on release and neither of the other two are my type of game, but at least they're all some 'name recognition' titles. Certainly not a terrible month y any stretch, but nothing I'm looking forward to either.

I have never played borderlands before. It it a game I can just jump into without playing the previous games?

Moaners and the typical 'last month I'll be on PSPlus' comments are getting increasingly isolated, which is a good sign. You can't argue that it isn't three decent games.

I normally defend Sony, but they are not even trying any more.
Among us is is a £3 game.
Borderlands 3 has already been on PS plus extra and could be bought for £9.
Can't stand american sports of any flavour and hockey is the worst. Including a game of such niche appeal is sticking 2 fingers up at the 80% of us who would never go near it.

Where is the increase in quality that they used to justify the price rises?
Truly awful.... maybe the moaners have it right and I've had blinkers on?

Borderlands 3 is really good fun although I already own it. I'll give the NHL game a shot as the last ice hockey game I played was (no sniggering back there) was on the mega drive 😆🤣. I know..

With Borderlabds being that price did EA screw over Sony to put NHL onto Essential so they put two other low price games on there?

Or is Sony really hard up on the games money front so they cannot afford to put better games on there.

Despite the fact I already own the games I'd want, that is a stellar line-up!

Borderlands 3 would be the headturner if not already on Switch alongside Among Us. But I might end up playing some NHL - while there are a few alternatives in hybrid format, the sport gives me a general impression of being a comparatively rarer guest on consoles in general, so it's always neat to be offered more of it.

Not gonna lie, its the first time im tempted to try one of the annual cash grabs, I mean sport games.

Showing my age, as when I was young only north america played it, but as you've clearly indicated, thats no longer the case. Still think its of niche appeal for a world wide service 😊

The NHL series is quite popular in the US and Canada and is particularly relevant given the playoffs just wrapped up. I haven't seen sales figures but I imagine it also has a market in central, northern, and eastern Europe which is home to countries that play the sport well.

Anybody who is the slightest bit interested in Borderlands 3 surely has bought it by now. I'm getting nostalgia vibes from it. I had a lot of fun with that game, what feels like a long, long time ago.

The same is surely true with Among Us, right?

So what's left - a sports game which might appeal to a few people who were holding off on the latest iteration until a month or two before the next annual release drops and this version goes on sale for under $5 everywhere? Yep.

$80 a year for a $5 game, an EA Play double-dip and maybe the weakest entry in the Borderlands series.

A bad month for me i have borderlands 3 and among us. I dont know if anyone still plays among us and i dont play sports games

Not a great month for me, I wouldn't try any of these.

Not a bad list, but not one I'm personally interested in. I'm waiting to see what new classics are going to be added. I'm hoping for Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain, God of War, GTA Liberty City Stories, SSX Tricky, Tony Hawk's Underground, or James Bond Nightfire.

The last NHL game I played was NHL 2009 on PC. Never played any since. Because they gave up on releasing NHL for PC. I'll NHL 24 now that I have a PS5.

I honestly imagined Among Us was a free game. It looked like one

@Silenos One AAA game that’s about a year old would be a good start already. Especially since that’s what we got from PS Plus until a year ago or so.

Borderlands 3 was released in 2019. Hockey I would understand if it were available in Canada only, and Among Us costs what? 3bucks? ffs
I expected this month to be bad, but Sony is just giving the middle finger to their customers.

@Anke I was just about to say a similar comment although the last one I played was NHL '95 on Super Nintendo. I think I will give this one a try as I already own the other two games.

i'm excited for nhl , i love hockey games but , looking at the complaints people always complain but i don't even see them say what games they would rather have?

Got both Borderlands 3 and Among Us for free on Epic Game Store over the years.

I went to watch an ice hockey game a few years ago, got free tickets through my son's school. Never really watched it in the past, outside the Winter Olympics. Enjoyed it immensley. No idea who was playing though. Two Lancashire teams I think. I had a life-changing hotdog at half time. Anyway that's my ice hockey story I hope you all enjoyed it, I wonder who's going to play me in the film adaptation.

Among us is always fun.for a quick 10 minutes or so, one to save for when something is updating or downloading.

Never played a borderlands game go will give that a swirl. This is much better than last month's.

Borderlands is one of my fave franchises, by I wouldn't call it comedy in BL3.

@jgrangervikings1 thanks for tip on Super Blood Hockey. Put many hours in the old Nintendo version. I'll pick it up.

Enjoyed borderlands one with the wife but it became too bogged down later, no interest in social games so Among Is is out, that leaves hockey. I liked it on the mega drive but imagine it’s more like Ultimate Team these days…I’ll skip them thanks. Still Football Manager 24 is keeping me very entertained so I’m happy with my sub.

This is easily the best lineup, in my opinion, in at least a year. 3 games I would actually at least try out. Can't remember the last time I said that.

While the pathetic crying month to month is annoying. I do think this is actually a good month. Gives people stuff to try in genres they may not try. Stop relying on free games to be your main games. Go story developers buy buying games you really want to play instead of hoping they become free. That mentality hurts gaming.

Among us seriously it's free do they need subs to PS+ that bad and go whelp young people or other trend focused adults join.

Borderlands 3 is fair but I think something else could be there.

Sports because why?They are worth nothing over time and most already bought it or will later so why even if benefits.

Sony is lazy to pick something else. They make their audience target clear here this month the Idiots.

I think a tactics game or arcade racer or something party or puzzle would do for variety. Not expecting a visual novel after all to slip in.

I buy only old arcade or racing annual nowadays because Sims suck this gen. Any arcade racer would be good to offer anti grav or kart racer or otherwise Indie ones.

But even an arcade fantasy sports game is better than major sports series.

Give people those.

I don't sub but an indie or other AAA would do but these, pass. I got Borderlands 3 already.

Happy to pick up Borderlands 3, though I can't make heads or tails about the different "cuts" dlc. Haven't played NHL since mega drive, but enjoyed a recent NoClip doc on the series, so might actually give this a go. Can't believe they put Among Us in this, but will get go back to this to finish off trophies.

Hmm, actually thinking of canceling my PS Plus alltogether now.
It's been months on end where both essential and extra got nothing i'm interested in, but this month takes the cake for essential.
BL3 is one of those games that everyone who is interested in it already has played it long ago, Among us is mp garbage and who's even interested in nhl outside the usa?

First time in a long long time I've not had any interest in at least one of the games, to be fair it would have been Borderlands 3 but I have it on PC so there's nothing for me in the essential
Extra will almost definitely have a title that's appealing though

Not great for me but I did enjoy Borderlands 3, NHL is not my bag but no issue there, I was pleased when we got FIFA where I am sure the ice hockey fans were not, so all's fair

I've generally found the games on PS plus to be reasonable and stated so. I think they are getting worse and think this is the worst of the months - and again I've stated so.
Only fools think that gaming is some kind of war where people are on the attack or defense and Sony certainly don't need any defence from me or anyone else.
I comment on what I see, what I like, and what I don't. I'm not so deluded as to think my opinion matters in any way and it certainly won't shape what Sony does. If I don't like it I can either wait for a better month or cancel my sub, but my reaction will not shape anyone else's opinion and nor should it.
We are discussing a hobby, not on the front line..

Strangely, I don’t think the first game (nor its remaster) has ever been given out.

I'm a very casual gamer but this as a selection is woeful. I'll pick up NHL 24 but that'll be it. I think I've only picked up about 4 games this year from essential.
I don't think I'll renew my subscription when it comes round again if this continues. Would rather scour eBay for cheap second hand games.

I changed the tier from Extra to Essential last month...not because Extra was bad or too expensive but simply because I mainly play games I buy. And I find Essential completely fine for me that from time to time I get something for free...this month is OK I believe, I´ll add all 3 to my library and definitely will give NHL and BL3 a try someday

Not to disparage the games themselves which are decent, but in the context of PS Plus membership it's another month where Sony limp to the barn having done the bare minimum.

For the first time in 6 years im unsubscribed to any subscription... and this will not get me back... my anger grows for you sony... its like pearl harbor all over again

I did have Borderlands 3 ages ago but I guess me and my wife can play it, although we got bored with Tiny Tina pretty quickly.

Among us and NHL, meh. I have low expectations for the essential plus games anyway so I can hardly say I feel disappointed. I've been fairly content with the premium subscription however.

I should recalibrate my world view a bit in light of all the decades that have passed since I was young and developed my views of the world! its clear the sport is nowhere near as 'niche' as I had thought, and I can see from the comments that many people fancy giving it a try, so I guess its not such an awful title to add, even if it doesn't appeal to me.

Dang... hopefully Extra isn't a July letdown.
